In honour of the annual Meatout on March 20th 2011 (tomorrow!) we wanted to encourage all of our readers to have a meat/dairy/egg free Sunday.  This will be happening worldwide – neat!  To help make the Meatout a success, we thought we would offer a list of some of our favourite vegan friendly options in Vancouver to get you through your meat-free Sunday.

Bandidas

Wicked brunch till 3pm, including vegan bennies, Daiya Cheese and Bloody Marys for $5 on Sundays. Located at 2781 Commercial Drive.

The WallFlower

This place has a separate vegan menu, also uses Daiya and has a daily green plate special that can always be made vegan. Located at 2420 Main Street.

Budgie’s Burrito

It doesn’t get better than Budgie’s for cheap, Mexican eats.  By far the BEST tortilla soup in town and any burrito can be made vegan with guacamole subbed at NO EXTRA CHARGE, and they’re licensed!  Located at 44 Kingsway.

Nuba

We’ve been eating here for a couple years now and it never disappoints. Daily soup is always vegan, Najib’s Special and Mjadra are must tries, and they have recently added a fourth location at The Waldorf.  Our favourite locale is at 207-B West Hastings.  Warning – garlic-heavy menu!

The Refinery

This place is our neighbourhood hangout.  The Organic Vegetable board is a delicious selection of roasted, pickled and raw treats, and the Stuffed Portobello Mushroom is delicious.  And if you’re lucky enough to have Cocktail Queen Lauren Mote behind the bar, you won’t even notice that you’re not eating meat.  Located at 1115 Granville Street.

Wild Rice

We’ve only been here once but were more than pleased with the menu – everything was delicious!  It’s modern Chinese food with convenient ‘V’ symbols next to everything vegan, including dim sum!  Located at 117 West Pender Street.

Joe Fortes

I know you’re thinking “Is she talking about Joe Fortes Seafood and Chop House?”  Yes I am!  The addition of vegan options at this Vancouver meat-centric classic is a testament of how progressive our city is becoming.  Vegan options include: The Spa Salad, Fire Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup and the Smoked Portobello Steak.  They are all scrumptious though a bit pricier than the restaurants mentioned above.  However, the service is impeccable and would be a wonderful dinner to end your meat-free Sunday!
