Sprouted Lentils – Alive and Delicious!

I just love how alive and vital these little lentils look after me taking care of them for a couple days.

Instead of being a dull little bean inside my cupboard, they are growing and packed with enzymes that help digestion, cleanse the liver and give me amazing energy.

Here’s a quick way to grow your own sprouts this winter with minimal equipment and time.

Ingredients / Supplies: About Three Cups of Sprouted Lentils

1 cup of dried lentils or more if you want to have more sprouts

3 cups of purified water

1 large bowl

1 strainer

1 tea towel or cheese cloth

Method: How to Sprout Lentils

There is another way to sprout lentils using jars that you can check out on HonestFare.com, but I kind of do my own thing.

Add the lentils and fresh water together in your large bowl and let sit on the counter overnight. You can expect your lentils to double, triple, or even quadruple in size, so you may have to add more water. Once they have sat about 12 hours, place them in your strainer and rinse thoroughly.

Place the strainer with the lentils in it over your bowl and cover with your tea towel or cheese cloth. Some say to rinse every four hours, some say every 8-12. I just do it whenever I remember, which is usually 2-3 times per day, but definitely once in the morning and once at night.

Supposedly the nutrients reach their peak when the sprout is about 3 times as long as the seed, so that’s when I stop. The lentils shown above (french green variety) took about three days in total.

If you forget to rinse them, they can get nasty and will smell terrible, so don’t forget!

Once they have reached their desired sprouting glory, place them on a paper towel in a glass container or bowl and leave in the fridge where they will be good for at least a week. You can add them to salads, wraps, sauces and dips, or anything else that needs a crunchy boost.

Happy sprouting!
