Vegan Brunch in Vancouver: Bandidas Taqueria

Vancouverites take their brunching VERY seriously. The array of mid-day bites in this city, usually paired with a Mimosa or a Caesar, are plenty and top notch. For us vegans, the options are growing rapidly, but there are a few pioneers that have been doing it right for years now, and should not be overlooked. One of these delicious pioneers is Bandidas Taqueria

Bandidas’ brunch is available daily from 9am-3pm (yay for those of us with alternative schedules!) and has the usual brunch suspects, with a Mexican twist. Full disclosure: Bandidas is a vegetarian restaurant and has eggs and cheese on the menu but you can sub out the eggs for a dreamy tofu/butternut combo and they have Daiya cheese, along with a house-made vegan sour cream. Co-owner Aiyana graciously hosted us for a Friday power brunch a few weeks ago, here’s what we had:

-Mrs.Cohen-

“Bandidas’ spicy tortilla soup, finished with avocado, toasted tortillas chips, feta cheese, cilantro & two poached eggs.”

Like I said, we subbed out eggs for the dreamy tofu/butternut combo and Daiya cheese. Now this may seem like an unusual offering for brunch, but we were all pleasantly surprised by how right it felt. It’s warm, easy to eat first thing, and the flavours are perfect together, with a touch of heat. The generous serving of avocado did not go unnoticed either.

-Alan’s Breakfast-

“Romaine, purple cabbage, cilantro, cheese, pinto beans, balsamic vinaigrette, guacamole, and apple salsa, topped with two fried free-range eggs. Served with two fresh, hand-made corn tortillas.”

Our second course, Alan’s Breakfast was a fresh, savoury breakfast salad, with a mixture of warm and cold items. It’s a great option for those looking for a light, but protein rich option, and it would be especially satisfying in the summer months. While we all agreed that Alan’s breakfast seemed more “lunchy” than brunchy, we really enjoyed to the mix of flavours.

-Breakfast Tacos-

“Our hand made soft corn tortillas with black beans, caramelized onions, scrambled eggs, roasted tomato salsa, cheese and sour cream. Served with purple cabbage.”

Breakfast tacos every day please! These were a hit amongst the group and went down in a hot second. The caramelized onions add so much deep flavour and a little purple cabbage adds crunch, making every bite perfect. The Breakfast Tacos should not be overlooked, and we even suggest ordering these as an appetizer before you dive into something else so everyone at the table gets a bite.

-Dessert-

We couldn’t decide between the Chocolate Truffles and the Coconut Chocolate Chip Cake, so ordered them both, as one does, even though we were full to the brim. There’s ALWAYS room for at least one bite of dessert, right? The truffles are made from mint chocolate and are such a smooth and decadent morsel. The Coconut Chocolate Chip Cake blew our minds and we are sure it will blow yours too. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, light and fluffy and has chocolate chips laced throughout. We cannot stress this enough, order dessert!

Bandidas Taqueria has a friendly, laid back feel, really great daily drink specials, a lunch and dinner menu that we frequent often and a dedication to being as environmentally low-impact as possible. They’ve also just doubled in size by expanding into the space next door, creating more room for more eaters.
